Gua Sha Therapy
What is Gua Sha Therapy?
Gua Sha is a traditional Chinese healing method that involves gently scraping the skin’s surface with a smooth-edged tool to release stagnation and promote the free flow of Qi and blood. The technique helps clear toxins, reduce inflammation, and relieve deep muscle tension. The term “Gua” means “to scrape,” and “Sha” refers to the temporary redness that may appear — an indication that circulation has been activated and blockages are being released.
Our Treatment Approach
At Yulong TCM, Gua Sha treatments are performed with sensitivity and precision. Maria van Bruggen, a certified ZHONG practitioner, combines classical Chinese techniques with modern understanding of the fascia and meridian system. The strokes are gentle and rhythmic, promoting deep relaxation while clearing stagnation. The method can be used on the neck, shoulders, back, or limbs to relieve pain and restore balance.
Conditions We Commonly Treat with Gua Sha
- Muscle pain, stiffness, and tension (neck, shoulders, back)
- Headache, migraine, or dizziness from stagnation
- Fatigue, sluggish circulation, or lymphatic congestion
- Respiratory issues such as cough or chest tightness
- Digestive or menstrual discomfort caused by stagnation
- Stress, tension, and emotional imbalance
What to Expect During a Session
Your session begins with a short consultation and pulse diagnosis to determine the areas of stagnation. A light oil or herbal balm is applied to the skin, and a smooth jade or buffalo horn tool is used to perform the scraping technique. The sensation is pleasant and releasing — never painful. Mild redness may appear, which fades within a few days. Each treatment lasts about 45–60 minutes and leaves most clients feeling lighter, open, and deeply relaxed.
Frequency and Course of Treatment
Some conditions respond immediately, while others benefit from several sessions to achieve lasting improvement. Gua Sha can also be combined with acupuncture, cupping, or herbal medicine for enhanced results. The ideal frequency and focus will be discussed during your first appointment.
